With iOS 14, Apple finally introduced Home Screen widgets to the iPhone. While third-party developers can make widgets for their apps, some of the most useful ones are for iOS’s native apps, which support the features you are most likely to use everyday. And when you update to iOS 15, you’ll find six new Apple-made widgets, as well as two new upgrades to Smart Stacks. Let’s check ‘em out.
Let’s take a look at the six new Apple widgets in iOS 15, starting with:
The new Find My widget offers two modes: People, which gives you a glance at the location of the people whose locations you are following in Find My (Apple warns not all devices and configurations are supported here); and Items, which lets you keep tabs on the items you track through Find My, like AirTags and AirPods Pro. Both People and Items come in small and medium-sized widgets.
The new Contacts widget shows you a list of your top contacts. If you follow any of these contact’s locations, you’ll see them appear below their name as well. From the Edit Widget option, you can reorder the list, or replace a contact by long-pressing on the name.
Game Center’s widget comes in two different versions; Continue Playing, which lets you quickly access recently played games, and Friends Are Playing, which lets you check out games your friends recently played. Both options come in small, medium, or large-sized widgets.
Apple calls the App Store widget Today; named after the Today feature in the App Store, it’ll show you daily updates on what’s new and coming up in apps and games on iOS. It comes in small, medium, and large-sized widgets.
The Sleep widget is called Data and Schedule; it shows you how well you slept the night before and reviews your Sleep schedule. It is only available as a small-sized widget.
Mail has a new Mailbox widget, which gives you quick access to one of your mailboxes (your choice). It comes as a medium or large-sized widget.
In addition to these new Apple-made widgets, iOS 15 brings some new changes to Smart Stacks, which group together various useful widgets for you, changing them up based on factors like the time of day.
If you use Smart Stacks, you might notice iOS suggest widgets to add to that stack based on your app usage. This feature can be turned on or off when editing Smart Stacks.
You can now reorder your Smart Stacks much more easily than you could in iOS 14, thanks to the updated iOS’s improved controls.
