Because I am a Serious Cineast (I even subscribe to The Criterion Channel!), it is my job to be incredibly excited about the Dec. 4 premiere of David Fincher’s MANK, which marks the extension of Netflix’s relationship with the renowned auteur into feature films after two lauded seasons of the serial killer drama Mindhunters.

MANK is the kind of movie that seems tailor-made for the streaming age: a lavish, big-budget, star-studded production with extremely niche appeal. In this case, the film delves deep into the making of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. So deep, in fact, that it isn’t really even about the making of the movie so much as the writing of the screenplay; the title is taken from the nickname of Kane’s co-screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman). À la the Shakespeare/Marlowe debate, there is some controversy over who wrote the script for the legendary film—a question Fincher (working from a script written by his father Jack Fincher in the 1990s) seeks to answer via an exploration of Mank’s insecurities and addictions.

Plus it looks real pretty:

However, if I am being honest, MANK is not the Netflix premiere I am most looking forward to this month. No, after the year I’ve had, I’m eager for something fluffy and feel-good—something that doesn’t involve delving into anyone’s shattered psyche. That’s why I can’t wait for the Dec. 11 debut of schlock master Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the Broadway hit The Prom, which follows a bunch of well-meaning celebrities as they crash a small-town high school’s big dance in the name of standing up for the local queer kids who have been barred from attending. Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, but somehow not Gwyneth Paltrow, star.

I can’t wait.

If you aren’t trash like me, you can also look forward to some more sure-to-be acclaimed film premieres, from the George Clooney-directed sci-fi drama The Midnight Sky to the Viola Davis/Chadwick Boseman-starring biopic Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
