If you have one of three different models of an Ellipsis Jetpack hotspot—the same Jetpack hotspot you would have purchased from Verizon to give nearby devices access to 4G connectivity—you’re going to want to stop using them. Verizon is recalling around 2.5 million of these hotspots over concerns that their lithium-ion batteries could overheat and cause a fire (or give you a decent burn).
The three models in question are the Ellipsis Jetpack MHS900L, MHS900LS, and MHS900LPP. If you own one, you’ll want to take the following steps before you ship it back to Verizon:
“If your device is turned off, please turn it on so that the affected Ellipsis Jetpack devices can receive the over-the-air automatic software updates that will:
Display the device’s ID number (IMEI) on its scrolling screen, which will help with the exchange
Prevent the device from charging while it’s plugged in and powered on.
You’ll know the software update has been applied when you see the ID number (IMEI) scrolling on the device’s screen.
After the software update has been applied, users should leave the device powered on while it is plugged in.
When not in use, the device should be turned off, unplugged from its power source, and securely stored until you receive the packaging to return the Ellipsis Jetpack safely.”
That IMEI number is critical, as that’s how you’ll get the recall process rolling with Verizon when you either call 855-205-2627 or visit www.EllipsisJetpackRecall.expertinquiry.com to get started. As part of the recall, you’ll get a free hotspot to replace the dangerous Ellipsis Jetpacks, and you should also get a free return envelope to ship your Jetpack back to Verizon for disposal.
As the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s notice indicates, Verizon has dealt with around 15 reports or so of overheating Jetpacks, including six reports of fire damage and two burns. That’s a pretty low number given the number of Ellipsis Jetpacks out there, but this isn’t something you’ll want to delay if you own one. It couldn’t be much easier to initiate the recall on your end; don’t put it off, or you’ll forget.
