WandaVision, the first Disney+ series exploring one of the shadowy corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is wrapping up early next month, but the streaming service isn’t about to let you cancel your subscription. The next Avengers spinoff, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, drops two weeks later on March 19. It’s almost as if Disney is afraid there’s little reason to get excited about their content platform aside from Marvel and The Mandalorian. (The Muppets aside, there is not.)
Certainly if you are hot for Earth’s mightiest heroes, the new series will give you plenty to cheer about. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan return as the titular B-listers, who together seem to have taken up the conspiracy-fighting mantle of Captain America, who is very old now, for reasons to do with time travel and Chris Evans’ contract expiring. The trailer hints at a plot by bad guy Daniel Brühl (last seen in Captain America: Civil War) to rid the world of superheroes, and Emily VanCamp returns as Peggy Carter’s niece (and former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent) Sharon Carter, because these franchise-extenders all all about fan service, so why not lean into it?
Otherwise, the most exciting offering on the service this month is going to cost you: Disney is dropping its next animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon, a fantasy epic inspired by the legends and cultures of Southeast Asia, directly onto Disney+ on March 5, but only if you are willing to pony up a $30 “Premiere Access” fee. Or you can wait three to four months, at which time it will be available to all subscribers for free.
Finally, only ‘90s kids will understand why the launch of a new TV series based on The Mighty Ducks franchise is Very Exciting; you can quack along to that one on March 26.
