HBO Max is a pretty sweet streaming service, rolling up shows and movies from HBO, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Turner Classic Movies with tons of other Warner Bros. content into a single app. Unfortunately, it still isn’t available everywhere—or on Roku, anyway. Today the streamer announced it will, at long last, be available on Amazon tablets and Fire devices, but Roku owners are still out of luck. However, if you are tied to your Roku but willing to fiddle around with your other devices, you can get HBO Max onto your TV in other ways.
First, check to see if the HBO Max app is available on other devices connected to your TV, including the TV itself. If not, most people probably have access to an Android, iOS, Windows, or Mac device. They all support HBO Max in some capacity, and there are plenty of ways to get your PC or smartphones connected to your Roku or TV.
Most Roku products support mirroring from Android and Windows devices, and a handful support Apple’s AirPlay 2 if they update to Roku OS 9.4 or higher:
Roku TV: Axxxx, Cxxxx, CxxGB, 7xxxx
Roku Streambar: 9102
Roku Smart Soundbar: 9101, 9100
Roku Ultra: 4800, 4670, 4661, 4662, 4660, 4640
Roku Premiere: 4630, 4620, 3920
Roku Streaming Stick: 3811, 3810
Both of these methods require your casting device and your Roku be connected to the same wifi network. (And, of course, you’ll need an iOS/iPadOS device running 12.3 or later, or a macOS laptop running Mojave or later.) If your Roku doesn’t support screen mirroring, you can also try casting to another device or directly to your TV, instead.
Lastly, if none of your devices support mirroring or Airplay, try plugging your PC or smartphone into your TV via HDMI and watching that way. It makes for a cumbersome living room setup, sure, but many Windows and Mac computers have an HDMI out port (or the ability to connect one via a dongle like this one, which converts Thunderbolt to HDMI). Grab a cheap, but decent HDMI cable (or whatever cable or adapter you’ll need for your smartphone), and you’ll be set. It’s not an elegant way to get HBO Max on your TV, but it works.
