Audible announced an all-new pricing structure that will be rolling out to all existing and new subscribers this week.
Instead of Audible Gold and Platinum, the company now offers Audible Plus and Audible Premium Plus. Both plans include access to tens of thousands of hours of audio content, but the type of content differs between each of the plans. We’ll cover what you get by subscribing to Audible Plus and Premium Plus, and what (if anything) will change for current Gold and Platinum subscribers.
At $7.95 a month, the new Audible Plus subscription is the cheapest Audible plan yet. It’s also the most limited, content-wise (at least relatively).
Audible Plus grants users ad-free access to all Audible-exclusive audiobooks, podcasts, and audio dramas. This includes over 68,000 hours of available content, and the company says more is in production. All Audible Plus library content can be accessed with the Audible app or through Amazon Alexa devices.
Importantly, Audible Plus does not include the free monthly audiobook credits like Audible Gold and Platinum (and now Audible Premium Plus). You can still listen to free audiobooks with Audible Plus, but you’ll only have access to Audible’s first-party catalog at this tier. Titles outside of Audible’s catalog will have to be purchased.
The new Premium Plus tier combines the previous Audible Gold and Platinum packages into a single service. Like Audible plus, Premium Plus includes access to Audible first-party audio content, but Premium Plus members also get monthly credits that can be used to download any piece of audio content no included in Audible’s Plus library—though how many credits you get depends on how much you pay.
Despite the new name, there are actually two versions of Audible Premium Plus available: one for $14.95 a month that gives you a single monthly credit (equivalent to Audible Gold), and another at $22.95 per month for two credits (replacing Audible Platinum).
These updates are sudden, but aside from the new plan names and access to more content, nothing else is changing for existing Audible subscribers. Any audiobooks you’ve already unlocked with Audible credits will still be available to you as well.
Conveniently, your current Gold or Platinum subscription will be swapped over to the equivalent Premium Plus plan—you don’t need to resubscribe or change any account settings. Gold members will automatically switch over to the $14.95/month Audible Premium Plus plan, and Platinum members will be moved to the $22.95/month plan. It’s likely you’ve already made the switch and may not even know it yet.
Audible says the new plans are in the “preview” phase and encourages users to reach out with any questions or feedback.
As for new subscribers, Audible Plus and Premium Plus will be available starting August 27.
