When I was growing up, September meant something. Cooler fall weather (nope), going back to school (nope), and new TV shows premiering across all the networks (well, kinda). Even if everything about the ninth month of 2020 is terrible, at least we’ll have a few things to watch on Hulu, which is premiering an interesting new series and bringing back one of my favorites.

Woke (debuting September 9) is a show for These Times. Based on the life and experiences of Black cartoonist Keith Knight, creator of “The K Chronicles,” it follows Keef (Lamorne Morris), an artist who is reluctantly drawn into political activism after he becomes the victim of police brutality. He awakens to the reality of systemic racism all around him, suddenly unable to unsee all of his white friends’ unconscious privilege and anti-Black micro-aggressions. Woke aims to satirize the already pretty fucking surreal landscape of America circa 2020, which is a tall order indeed.

Meanwhile, if you are lamenting the fact that kids won’t be able to return to in-person school this fall, the second season of the brilliant comedy series Pen15 will remind you that they might be better off, because wow, sometimes in-person school kind of sucks, especially if you’re in middle school. Despite it being a new season, incestuous (not like that) best friends Anna (Anna Konkle) and Maya (Maya Erskine) are still in seventh grade (because seventh grade has been proven to be the absolute worst), setting us up for 14 more episodes of endearingly painful cringe comedy and too-real tween emotions.
