Nvidia’s cloud streaming service, GeForce Now, is now live on iOS and iPadOS. It offers a browser-based format that allows it to circumvent some of Apple’s streaming restrictions, and the craftiness pays dividends. It’s a great way to streams games from the cloud or your local gaming PC on your iPhone.
Unlike, Stadia, Luna, or Xbox cloud streaming—which sell games à la carte or have their own rotating library available for subscribers—GeForce Now lets you stream any PC game you own on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG (soon) to your iPhone or iPad.
Fortnite is among the games supported, making it once-again playable on iOS despite Apple’s App Store ban, but it’s not quite ready yet. Nvidia says its working with Epic to bring a touch control version of Fortnite to its service so mobile users can play without needing a Bluetooth controller, which is required to play all other games on GeForce Now.
We’re not sure when this new touch-based version of Fortnite will arrive, but you can play your other PC games on iOS via GeForce Now while you wait. All you have to do is visit play.geforcenow.com on your iPhone or iPad, follow the on-screen instructions to create a new account and start playing—you don’t have to install any apps to your device.
GeForce Now has paid and free membership options. Free accounts are limited to one-hour play sessions. You can play unlimited sessions per day, but you’ll be disconnected automatically and will need to reconnect to GeForce Now’s servers each hour, which can potentially waiting in a queue if the service is busy. Paid members can play for much longer and get higher connection priority, plus RTX-enhanced graphics, for $5 a month or $25 for six months.
For iOS owners who don’t want to wait for the touch-based version of Fortnite on GeForce Now, there are two other apps you can use to get the game on your iPhone—with a few compromises, of course.
If you own a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One (or soon a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X), you can use either platforms’ mobile app to stream games from your console to your iPhone. In-home streaming is a free feature on PlayStation and Xbox, but you have to play Fortnite using a controller rather than touch controls, as you’ll be streaming the console version to your iPhone rather than playing the mobile version.
